What Can You Do?
Here Are Some Ways You Can Help

Friends & Parents:

  • Let her know that you notice and care about what happens to her.

  • Start talking to her; don't interrogate her.  Keep communication open.

  • Tell it like it is.  Remind her that jealousy is not love: it's control.

  • Listen to her and believe her.  Don't blame her.

  • It is okay to tell he that you are afraid for her and that you think her boyfriend is dangerous.

  What Parents Can Do:

  • Set limits together with your teen and make a safety plan

  • Try to agree on safe circumstances under which she may see her boyfriend.  That way you will give her a chance to judge him herself.

  • Even if she denies being in danger, make sure she knows what to do in an emergency.

  • Tell her you will pick her up anywhere, anytime, no questions asked.

  • Tell neighbors, family and school officials what to watch for.

  • Say what you feel, lovingly.

  • Listen to your teen.  Do not scream and yell and tell her what she can and can't do - because that's what her boyfriend is doing.
